Off The Cuff On Your Ear!
by:  Joanna Pitman Yates

What do celebrities such as Willie Nelson, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, George Bush Sr. and Miley Cyrus all have in common?  They generously donated items for auction to The Women Who Wine of Texas fund raiser held at South Shore Harbor Resort in March and benefited The Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Women Who Wine of Texas is a 501(c) (3) organization who celebrated their four-year anniversary in April.   This small group of dynamic, results-oriented, and fun-loving women who live in Bay Area Houston combine their unique talents and energies to benefit projects that contribute to the growth and development of Bay Area Houston.

Off The Cuff On Your Ear was an evening like no other, it was personal and  warm while at the same time energy filled the room due to auction items that were so difficult to obtain they caused a bidding frenzy.

An event of this magnitude would not have been possible without the generosity of corporations that lent their sponsorship. The lead sponsor was Fusion Inc. owners Stratton Gillis and Al Wade.  Kevin Venable of Amoco Federal Credit Union joined the women early on, as well as  David Skinner of D’Vine Wine Kemah.  Ann Hacker, owner of Black Rose Steele, whose generosity is legendary in Bay Area Houston was on board with her sponsorship, as well as a worthy adversary during the live auction.

The evening kicked off with champagne and hors d’ oeuvres being served in the foyer and music by Labella Cello’s, Della Grigsby gave guests the opportunity to mingle and view the live auction items that would be up for bid later in the evening.

Upon entering the ballroom, you could have been in any city in the world; the ambiance was that of a boutique nightclub.  The room was draped in hunter green, wine and gold fabric, with banquet couches and ottomans provided by Darryl and Company which gave the guests a place to relax in between bidding. Cocktail tables adorned wine linens with sheer gold overlays with centerpieces by Deanna Rhodes of Flowers and Gifts Unlimited which were both unique and diverse.

Jazz music by Canal Street Café played as guests munched delicacies diverse enough to please even the pickiest of foodies.  The Wine Bucket, a specialty wine  shop and tasting room located in Houston, one of the vendors for the evening, brought wine accessories guests could purchase as well.

Steve Phelps kept the crowd buzzing with his high energy auction style.  Bailey’s American Grill donated a dinner for 12, in your home with wines pairing for each course; gift certificates for Southwest Airlines and Hilton Hotel;  a weekend on Lake Conroe with gift certificates to the Yacht Club and golf course; and a dinner for 10 in your home donated by Grand Finale Catering.

The auction item deemed priceless was a pair of VIP tickets to the Annual County Music Awards and the celebrity after-party in Las Vegas. These tickets are not available to the public and were generously donated by Keith and Roxanne Spalding.

The evening wrapped with guests celebrating their wins and collecting their goodies as the Women Who Wine kicked off their shoes, poured a glass of well-deserved wine and toasted each other to another job well-done.
