The Women Who Wine of Texas - Wrap Their Arms Around A Great Cause
The Women Who Wine of Texas is a small group of dynamic, results oriented, fun loving women living in Bay Area Houston. The charter was formed by founding members Joanna Yates, Marcy Fryday and Melissa Hulvey in April of 2004. The intent was to develop lasting friendships with strong women that they admired and wanted to get to know better while at the same time putting their efforts into projects that both contribute to the growth and development of their community, as well as helping those in need. Therefore, it stands to reason when you orchestrate a group like these positive women behind a good cause, the results are going to be outstanding.
Such was the case when The Women Who Wine adopted a room at the Bay Area Turning Point, Inc. The Turning Point is a non-profit community based social service agency providing a variety of assistance services including shelter to families in need and community education/crime prevention activities in the Greater Bay Area and surrounding areas. They empower survivors of family violence, sexual assault, and displacement by providing crisis intervention and emergency shelter within our community - the Greater Bay Area.
The Turning Point offers services for residents as well as non- residents. Some of those services include:
- Safe shelter for up to 55 women and children.
- Transportation, child care, medical needs, job skills, life skills, referrals and case management.
- 24 hour crisis hotline and emergency victim accompaniment to area hospitals and police departments.
- Support group for Survivors of Rape/Sexual Assault.
- Support group for survivors of domestic violence.
- Assistance in obtaining victim rights and remedies- Protective Orders, Crime Victims' Compensation, Court
Accompaniment and filing charges.
- Accompaniment to civil and criminal court hearings.
- Peer support counseling for survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence.
- Therapeutic counseling for adult, adolescent and child survivors of domestic and/or sexual abuse.
The Women Who Wines vision was to create a room of peace for these very brave women who persevere against great hardship to escape with their children to safety. The Turning Point project was spearheaded by charter members Johnette Norman and Linda Fernau. With Johnette’s organizational abilities and Linda’s excellent eye for color and interior design the project was under way. Linda found just the right paint color, flooring, bed linens, furniture and artworks that would be used to transform the small room into a very cheery, beautiful environment.
So with not so fashionable attire and love in their hearts the Women Who Wine rolled up their sleeves and dug in. The carpet had to be ripped out first and the floors cleaned. Then it was replaced with beautiful linoleum flooring that looks like real wood. Johnette Norman and her precious husband Carl got the dirty work out of the way with the help of Sandy Drechsel and Kim Cook. Products Transfer owned by Carl Norman has generously offered to underwrite the badly needed cleaning of the air ducts in the room. The painting party consisted of Jayne Soderberg, Joanna Yates, Linda Fernau and Nancy Vanderbilt, and of course there was a celebratory toast made at the end of the day to a job well done. Ron Fernau and J Holloman replaced the base boards in the room, and Carl Drechsel helped Linda bring the furniture back into the room. A very special thanks for the continued love, and support of the husbands that were able to lend a helping hand on this project.
When the room was put back together the beds were made and the new shower curtain, towels, linens and art work were in place the feeling of accomplishment and pride was palatable amongst those standing in the transformed room. We could not wait for the family assigned to the room to move in. After Linda’s preproduction on the project and once the carpet was removed the project took little over a week to complete.
The Women Who Wine will participate on many other charitable projects but will always hold this first endeavor closest to their hearts. The Turning Point still has a few rooms available for adoption. Please open your hearts and your pocket books and help increase the quality of life for these brave women and children as they work towards rebuilding themselves and their lives.
